I was walking with a CW3 and a Major walked by. The CW3 saluted and the SFC did not salute. The Major approached the SFC and said why didn't you salute. When walking with another officer does the SFC have to salute even though the CW3 already saluted. When you are walking with another Soldier senior to you. An officer is walking towards who renders the salute.?
The higher rank salutes and gives the greeting.
Both the CW3 and SFC salute, but only one speaks. When you are walking with another Soldier senior to you. An officer is walking towards who renders the salute.?
Normally only the senior man/woman salutes when a group walking in formation passes an officer. Two people walking together, passing an officer, should both salute.
We used to torture the officers by stringing out in a line so that each would salute and each would need to be saluted back individually.
You both are required to salute unless you are in a formation (the man in charge salutes for you) or a prisoner....
Saluting is a privilege and a duty.....
I taught ROTC..... It is tradition for new officers to give a silver dollar to the first person who salutes them after they are commissioned.....as a training NCO I used to have a little fun.....I and the Supply sergeant used to wait outside the auditorium.....when the new lieutenants would exit we would walk toward them.....one of us would salute with the left hand while the other saluted with the right hand.....then we quickly both walk away in different directions.....the poor lieutenant would know one of us was wrong but he had trouble figuring out which to correct......
when not in formation, the senior in the group initiating the salute (cw3 to major) salutes first. senior in the saluted group, the major, will then return the salute. but the sfc must still return the salute, esp since hes returning the salute to an officer senior to him.
I believe you salute anyone who is higher in rank or senior in rank to you.
That should have been made very clear in your initial training .
You ALWAYS salute a senior person...and a senior person ALWAYS returns the salute, regardless who he/she is with.
All personnel salute unless in a formation or work detail of 5 or more.
You all salute the senior officer...and smile.
both salute and try to make it at the same time so the officers doesn't have to salute twice
Both should salute.
