What's the difference between vectors and renders in Photoshop?

seriously, i have no clue what the difference are. renders are pics with transparent background... so are vectors, right? o.oWhat's the difference between vectors and renders in Photoshop?
Vector layers in Photoshop can be opened and edited in Illustrator, they can also be resized with no loss of quality. Once they are rasterized they become a flat image that can only be edited in photoshop.

Here is a good explanation of the difference between vector and bitmaps
