It is a science, in that its theories are scrutinised and proven or disproven through a rigorous scientific method. However unlike other social science it pays attention to the symbols, and hence this abstract and subjective thing called culture, which governs the lives of societies. Economics tries to factor in crazy human elements (why do people pick a $200 pair of trainers over a $50 pair), but there is still generally some basic principles to guide you (people want as much as possible at the lowest expense). In sociology any law can follow if people believe in it.
Sociology accounts for a broad range of issues. American sociology was specifically adopted in its origin to solve, study, and research social problems using scientific techniques. Sociology has a triad of interest, The individual, the group, and organizations/institutions. This may encompass quite macro issues from the family, society, nations, and global concerns with theory building and a variety of research techniques. Sociology as far as time goes have a keen interest in the past and present. Time is in someways very important, and in others time doesn't change anything..For example, we know that kids from the past and present need good parents, so it's almost a law of theory that it is important. Sociology, unlike psychology, takes on the nurture side, while psychology takes on the nature side. While only officially 200 years old, sociological writings do go back to aristotle, herodotus, and more. It is a very adaptable science and likes to check out a variety of issues from environmental sociology to industrial to crime/deviance and sociological social psychology. Great field and very important to the future, policy formation, and issues facing citizens/individuals around the globe.
