How do i apply a render to one side of an external wall?

Not sure of the correct wording, but i need to apply a render to one side of an external wall. How do i prepare the wall before applying the render? Do i need to fix batons first? How do i apply a render to one side of an external wall?
I believe they are called rendered laths - used for plaster work. Here's a web site to get you going.

mix up some mortar. cement, sand, water. lie on the grass and throw lumps of the mix at the wall. watch it slide and drop. Improve your aim and cover it partially while your misses cake you in cement, that dries while you work. you should now be encased in your self made prison. Enjoy. look at the sky, its starting to rain, now soil yourself, should not have had that third cup of nescafe. a spider crawls into your mouth and hungrily you devour it. oh the refreshing lifegiving rain. drink it all in. Nightfall comes and you are cold. you realise a dog has lifted its leg and urinated on you, You cry, you pray, you swear, but alas, this is the fate of the novice wall renderer.
